At the Southern GYN Specialty Center, we can evaluate and treat abnormal pap smears in the office. Colposcopy with cervical biopsy, if needed, is performed to evaluate abnormal pap smears. If treatment is needed, an in office LEEP procedure can be performed under local anesthesia, or a procedure can be scheduled as an outpatient surgery with IV sedation or general anesthesia if preferred. Not all cervical dysplasia needs to be treated. Call for an appointment to discuss the options available depending on the level of dysplasia found.
Pap smear guidelines were changed at the end of 2009. PAP smears are not recommended for women under age 21. Pap smears are now recommended to begin at age 21 and should be performed every 2 years untill age 29. At age 30 and beyond, screening should be performed every 1-3 years depending on the woman's past pap history and risk factors for dysplasia. Pap screening may be discontinued in women who have had a hysterectomy and no history of cervical dysplasia. The pap smears may also be discontinued at the age of 65-70 in women who have had at least 3 normal pap smears and no abnormal paps in the prior 10 years. The optimal frequency of screening should be discussed with your physician. Call the Southern GYN Specialty Center for an appointment to discuss this with Dr. Steve or Jackie.
